Spring Has Arrived

Just as we finished clearing our old wood, spring arrived at Well Hung Vineyard and the buds began to burst [insert witty birds and bees pun here]. In fact, we are running about 1-2 weeks ahead of schedule which means our 2012 vintage will be in your glass shorter (barring frost, random diseases, deer, birds, Occupy Well Hung campers, and the much maligned late summer hurricanes).

We were going to wait and tell you about our most recent bottling but there is no better way to welcome the summer temperatures than grabbing a bottle of our 2011 Virginia Viognier and firing up some crab cakes. After reaching a tender bottle age of 4 days we sampled the Viognier and are confident we’ve got another winner on our hands; if we get a chance to enter it in a competition before it sells out (or we end up drinking it ourselves). The screw caps make indulging a little too convenient.

We’re Totally Blushing

The calender claims it’s still January, but, much like the central Virginian weather, things are really heatin’ up at Well Hung Vineyard. Last week we finished bottling the 2011 Blush, and ladies and gentleman, we can’t wait to get it to you. It’s like a summer sunset in a bottle.

The 2011 Well Hung Blush has some fun features- a redesigned label, a lighter EcoSeries bottle made of 50% recycled glass, manufactured with a 29% smaller carbon footprint, and, probably most exciting for y’all, screw caps, so you can enjoy it [responsibly!] anywhere without having to track down that corkscrew.

The new Blush won’t be in stores for about a month still, but it will make its debut in just over two weeks at the Virginia Wine Showcase in Crystal City, February 18th and 19th. The 2009 Blush went just a little too fast; we’re hoping that the 207 cases o’ ’11 that we just finished will allow everybody to get their fill!

Cheers!

The results of the International Women’s Wine Competition were announced today and Well Hung Vineyard’s 2010 Virginia Viognier won a gold medal! Goooooold! We’re absolutely thrilled to have the quality of our wine recognized by such an esteemed group of women and wine enthusiasts.

Cheers everybody, and have a fantastic Thanksgiving. (Remember earlier when I said that our Viognier goes great with Turkey? I hope you have a bottle in the cellar somewhere! Or order a bottle online now and have it on hand for one of the other significant holidays we have comin’ right up!)

Just when you thought we couldn’t get more Well Hung…

We here at Well Hung Vineyard are proud to announce that in 2010, we will bring TWO new wine varieties into the Well Hung family.

Ladies and gentlemen, the 2010 Well Hung Petit Verdot / Merlot blend:

Well Hung Vineyard 2010 Petit Verdot harvest

Er… ok… maybe it isn’t quite done yet, but trust us, it’ll get there (but don’t the grapes look just delectable fresh off the vine?).

Also, farther back in the truck, not pictured above, are some more delicious looking grapes that will go into our (also NEW) 2010 Rose!

So to summarize, the Well Hung Vineyard 2010 line-  Rose, Petit Verdot / Merlot blend, Cabernet Franc, & Chardonnay.  That’s right, our line-up has doubled in size!

Bottoms up!

Special Deal- Wine Warehouse’s Select Six!

Hey everyone,

Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville is featuring the Well Hung Chardonnay as a part of their special “Select Six” deal this October! During the month of October, head to Wine Warehouse and purchase any 6 of their specially marked wines at a discount! Their newsletter so glowingly describes our Chardonnay, we’re convinced you’ll go home with no less than a 6 pack -

2008 Well Hung Wines Chardonnay

Aside from the fun label and the infinite number of crass jokes and double entendres that inevitably come with it, this new Virginia wine producer actually has the quality where it counts, INSIDE the bottle.  Crushed and bottled with the hlep of winemaker Michael Shaps at Virginia Wine Works, the fruit come from the home vineyard of viticulturalist Amy Steers and her husband Bill (a urologist, which adds yet another layer of humor to the name…) and along with their Cabernet Franc create some very well priced wines.  Bright ripe apple citrus aromas on the nose with just the slightest notes of vanilla from the oak and an impressively warm, inviting fullness of fruit in the mouth provide everything you would hope for from a Virginia Chardonnay.  It would be very easy to find more expensive Chardonnays that don’t provide the enjoyment found here, and if you’re feeling a little juvenile the label will give you a few giggles as well.

There you have it!  A good deal on a wine that’s good fun.

Cheers!
